How to Become a Better Skier – 7 Tips

Skiing, like almost anything else, becomes more enjoyable as you improve. The best skiers never stop learning and every little discovery brings more confidence, more rewards and opens up more possibilities the next time you hit the slopes. Regardless of your skiing level, here are 7 useful tips to help you become a better skier and make the most of your time on the snow.

1. Commit 100%

Commitment is the foundation of every downhill or adrenaline sport. Anything you approach defensively, and any movement you make half-heartedly, puts you at a disadvantage before you even begin. Hesitant skiing will throw you off balance. Worst of all, it takes away the best feeling skiing has to offer – letting your skis glide.

2. Strengthen Your Stance

A balanced stance makes skiing much easier. Being athletic and focused on your feet gives you the integrity you need to perform skiing manoeuvres. Ski from the “feet up”. Your skis are connected to your legs, so movements made with your legs will have an immediate response from the skis. Your upper body weighs much more than your lower body, so the less you move it, the more efficient you will be.

3. Let Your Skis Glide

Gravity is what pulls you downhill, and without it there would be no skiing. Even so, most people are afraid to give in to it and let their skis glide. You just need to understand one simple thing: When your skis are pointing downhill, they pick up speed and run smoothly. When your skis are pointing diagonally across the slope, they slow down.

4. The Outside Ski

If you feel like you could lift your inside leg, you are on the right track. One of the basic principles of skiing – put weight on your right leg, go left / put weight on your left leg, go right.

5. Vary Your Intensity

Most competent skiers find a zone they like and stay there. Some love calm, controlled descents, while others want to squeeze the maximum out of every second of the day. Both approaches can be useful, but neither makes the most of your potential. To keep progressing, you need to train across the entire spectrum.

6. Keep Progressing

Exercises can accelerate your progress when used correctly. Make sure that any exercise directly relates to a weakness in your skiing; not every exercise has to involve touching your knees! Pay attention to new sensations while performing the exercise, not just the results. Once you have learned an exercise on easy terrain, change your speed and the shape of your turns and try it in more challenging places. You need to practise the movement in all situations.

7. Check Yourself Regularly

Whatever your goals, external feedback is essential to keep you on the right track. Lessons from a professional will give you an idea of where you are and where to go next
