As part of the Janosik Winter Race, on February 7 the route called “The Margrave’s Walk” will pass through Bachledka, including the iconic Treetop Walk. Runners can expect a true winter challenge, a long mountain section, and above all unforgettable views of the Belianske Tatras – exactly what you’d expect from a race with a legend in its name.
The Margrave’s Walk
Although the Margrave was a scoundrel (after all, he was the one who had our Jánošík hanged), he still had a soft spot for beautiful views and loved long walks. In honor of his passion, we have no choice but to invite you on a march “in his footsteps.” You’ll set off in the traditional way from Jezersko, heading along the ridge of the Spišská Magura straight to the Treetop Walk, where stunning views will delight your outlaw hearts. Once you’ve had your fill of the scenery, you’ll pick up the pace along the blue trail toward the point at the Osturnia Pass. From there you’ll continue on the green trail to Osturňa—a Lemko village known for its distinctive painted wooden houses, the oldest of which date back to the 19th century.
A kilometer further on, you’ll cross the border and reach the pass above Łapszanka, where you can eat and drink your fill while taking in a beautiful, eye-catching Tatra panorama. Refreshed in body and spirit, you’ll move on, arriving after just under eight kilometers at the Community House in Łapsze Niżne. Here you’ll be able to dance to highlander music, which has the magical power to make blisters on tired feet disappear.
From there, “only” 21 kilometers remain to the finish. But what kilometers they are! The exposed ridges of the Spišská Basin – especially in winter – can really put you to the test, as many of you found out last year. The unassuming Grandeus showed its claws and got under runners’ skin even more than the famous Żar. Luckily, on the other side lies the iconic Dursztyn fire station, where miracles happen. And you’ll need them as you set off on the final part of the route, which – of course – leads over the beloved Żar, from where you’ll quickly reach Barwinková Hora.
Below Bendyik you’ll have a hot tea, and then there’s nothing left to do but get your legs moving and race to the finish in Niedzica. There you’ll be welcomed with highlander nectar and a bowl of warm food, cooked by the caring Helenka.
